Faculty of Psychology of the University of Warsaw
The slogan of openness accompanies elements of the concept in different scales and meanings, as an idea corresponding to the nature of contemporary academic education, based on dialogue, exchange of knowledge, interaction and cooperation.
The new educational and research building of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Warsaw is located on the Ochota Campus, in the vicinity of the planned University Forum. The departure point of the concept were issues related to the spatial order of the campus: strengthening relations with the city, connection with the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Park and shaping public spaces around the building and in the context of the planned University Forum. On this basis, the concept of a building composed of a disciplined, restrained and neutral main body, juxtaposed with a multifunctional canopy, attracting visitors and animating the life of the campus, was born.
The slogan of openness accompanies elements of the concept in different scales and meanings, as an idea corresponding to the nature of contemporary academic education, based on dialogue, exchange of knowledge, interaction and cooperation. The public ground floor and roof with garden are open to the campus, while the floors of the building are open to the inside. Teaching and research spaces have been laid out around a multifunctional atrium - a place of integration, exchange and meetings of all users — lecturers, doctoral students, students and visitors. Going beyond the outline of the ground floor and arranging a multifunctional public space under the covered entrance square, is an important element of the integration of the new building with the surroundings. Under the roof there is an exit from the underground parking, catering gardens, parking for bicycles, seats and carefully planned greenery.
The location on the ground floor of public functions, also accessible to users outside the faculty (exhibition space, canteen, cafeteria, hall), strengthens the presence of the building on the campus scale, makes it useful and attractive to a wide audience. The ground floor throughout its public part has been glazed. On the other hand, the facades of the main body were formed from two motifs: thickened modular divisions, introduced on the administrative floor and at other zones with preferred less visibility and sunlight, and from open glazed sections in all teaching rooms and reading rooms, emphasising the open, friendly character of the building and teaching and research spaces.
