Institute of Applied Social Sciences of the University of Warsaw

The Institute of Applied Social Sciences at Furmańska Street is another university building in Powiśle district, complementing a series of existing and planned buildings along Dobra Street. The masterplan will consolidate the university's presence at the Vistula riverbank and will influence the functioning and overall image of the district.

The primary objective of the Powiśle Campus is to be open and intertwined with the urban fabric. This obliged us to design a public building with a widely accessible ground floor and an attractive outdoor space. The goal for those spaces is to complement the neighbourhood with a new place, intended not only for the academic community, but also for residents, passers-by and tourists. The rich urban context provides many pretexts for this — the nearby Mariensztat, urban public facilities, green recreational areas, the proximity of the river and the planned pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Vistula River — together with the new buildings of the university provide an opportunity for the development of a multi-threaded part of the city and new energy.

The designed object is designed as two complementary free-standing bodies. A meandering green path runs between the buildings, enriching pedestrian communication inside the quarter. From the side of Dobra Street, in order to preserve the existing trees and create a public space in the zone of the main entrance, a deviated building line was proposed, led in a direction parallel to the facade of the Library of the University of Warsaw and the section of Dobra Street between Lipowa and Karowa.
