SOHO FACTORY WARSAW REVITALIZATION PROJECTS

Soho Factory is located in Kamionek, a neighborhood in Warsaw with rich and diverse history. A jute factory was established on the site before the World War I, only to be officially taken over by the Ammunition Plant “Pocisk” in 1920. The main production building was destroyed during World War II. After restoration, it was transformed into the Warsaw Factory of Motorcycles.

Neglected over the past decades, the complex was taken over a few years ago by the current owner, who saw potential in the dilapidated space and decided to add this location to the map of Warsaw’s creative sector.  In 2010 Projekt Praga was commissioned to design site interventions, including the concept of the central garden as well as adaptation and revitalization projects of buildings 18, 19, 23, 46 and more.

The existing buildings were repeatedly rebuilt over the years, sometimes the barbarian way. The site was in a state of decay and remained closed to the public. Hence, the high importance of opening up the complex, both literally – through opening the previously closed facades – and figuratively – through implementing new functions.

Today Soho is home to the Neon Museum and various offices, stores, restaurants and art galleries. Cultural events, such as Przetwory, Free Form Festival and Gdynia Design Days, are often held in the multifunctional spaces of the complex. While a few original craft workshops function on the site to this day, new buildings are erected as well. The development plan allows for a variety of activities and initiatives to take place, which resulted in great popularity of the place amongst the locals. The site quickly became widely recognizable.
